Principal's Corner

Dear Bennie Dover Parents/Guardians,

It is amazing how fast the 2016-2017 school year arrived and now we are coming to a close. While we have certainly had our set of challenges, this year has been one of many successes as well:

  • Our team fully integrated the Full Value Contract into our routines and expectations
  • Our Leadership Education and Development course enrollment doubled this year
  • Our TTO program reached more students this year and student are achieving at higher levels than we’ve had in the past.
  • Every student met in a weekly, small group Advisory
  • Our students are setting and reaching their individualized reading and math goals
  • Over 100 students stayed after school weekly from 2:15-4:45 attending Homework Workshops and Enrichment Activities.

We know that how time is used by your child during the summer months is important in impacting his/her continued growth and academic success. As our 8th graders move towards high school, your open and honest conversations about the discipline and expectations for high school success take on greater meaning. Our rising 8th graders must prepare for the demands of being our student leaders in the classrooms, hallways and cafeteria. Our 7th graders must learn how to be active participants in our learning community by doing their best and learning to work together both inside and outside of the classroom. Our 6th graders must learn how to manage their time and stay organized so that they maximize their opportunities for success!

Our students and families should take advantage of the wonderful community resources in New London, such as our local libraries, museums and summer youth programs. Your local librarian can recommend books and materials appropriate for your child’s age, interests and grade level.  In taking advantage of such resources, you are helping your child learn and at the same time creating great experiences and memories. These experiences help build their skills through the summer and into the school year.

As this is my last letter to you for the school year, I wanted to share some key events and dates:

 Event                                   Date                                      Time

  • 8th Grade Promotion Practice (see separate communication)
  • 8th Grade Dance           June 9th                               5:00-7:00

This time of the school year becomes very hectic and often students’ become distracted. We want to avoid misbehavior and referrals for discipline. Please continue to reinforce at home that school is not over until June 15th. Your continued monitoring of your child’s attendance, academic progress and behavior will help all of us bring the year to a successful conclusion.

I thank you for all that you do on the home front to help us best support your student. Your support makes a difference in your child’s success and that of our school community. I’ll see you in August!

Should you have any questions, please call us at 860-437-6480. We are excited to start this school year, and cannot wait to see you!
